Applicants must hold a Bachelor or a Master degree preferably in Life Sciences (Medicine, Biology, Biochemistry, etc), Health Technologies or related areas, but not exclusively. Applicants with other backgrounds, such as Physics and Mathematics, Engineering, Statistics and Computer Sciences are also encouraged to apply.

English is the working language at iMM and is used throughout the Program in all instances. Therefore, a very good command of spoken and written English is mandatory.

Documents required to apply:

  • CV
  • Bachelor or Master degree certificates, indicating the final grade and, if possible, the final classification of the disciplines completed;
  • Motivation letter;
  • ID information (type of document, number, expiration date).

Applicants will have to upload copies of all required documents as a single PDF file (including certificates of academic degrees, CV, ID/passport information, and motivation letter). Only files in PDF format are allowed, up to a maximum size of 10MB.

For candidates with academic degrees obtained abroad:
After the selection phase, scholarship contracts with candidates with diplomas issued by foreign institutions will only be concluded upon presentation of proof of recognition of the foreign academic degrees by the Portuguese authorities and conversion of the respective final grade to the Portuguese grading scale. This can be obtained at DGES.

Please be aware that it is necessary to be a citizen permanently and usually living in Portugal, in case the work plan of the requested studentship proceeds partially in a foreign institution (mixed studentships). This requirement is applicable to both national and foreign citizens.

Admission Process and Evaluation Criteria:

The Selection Committee is responsible for the evaluation and selection process:

Phase 1: Pre-Selection

70% Personal Curriculum

30% Motivation Letter – It should highlight: the reasons why the applicant wants to join the LisbonBioMed Program and develop their PhD project at iMM, and what outcomes are desired to achieve as a result of the PhD studies. In addition, applicants should identify in the motivation letter three of the iMM research groups out of the 20 groups available to welcome PhD students in 2024, whose research is most attractive to them and why. Applicants can find more detailed information about the research groups at iMM Website.

Phase 2: Interviews

The pre-selected candidates will be interviewed by the Selection Committee, whether at iMM, or by Zoom. The two references named by the candidates will then be asked for letters of recommendation.

At the interview, five main criteria will be considered:
